Head of Carbon Methodology and MRV Contract Role 50% minimum, 80% preferred Equity until Series A

Phi Earth is looking for a Head of Carbon Methodology and MRV to build and own the measurement, reporting and verification system behind its biomass projects.

Please note: This role is compensated in equity only until Phi Earth closes its Series A. Details are discussed during the interview process. Candidates must have an existing right to work in the intended work location.

About Phi Earth

Biofuel demand is heading toward 215 billion litres by 2030, with two thirds of the growth in emerging economies, according to the IEA. Regulation and buyer policy have closed off food land as a source, so that growth has to come from marginal and degraded land. That land is harder to farm, and much harder to prove anything about.

Grow. Soil biology that restores degraded ground, raises yield and reduces water use. Salt-damaged paddy at 4,000 ppm has been brought back to arable standard.

Predict. A digital twin that turns satellite, drone and field data into an operating calendar a farm manager can work from. In development and deployed on live pilots in Malaysia.

Prove. MRV that gives every batch its origin and chain of custody in the form GGL, ISCC and RED III auditors accept. Version one is running in pilot at Sana Fortis in Malaysia.

The three parts produce a single dataset: what was done on the ground, linked to what it produced. Phi Earth is pre-revenue, with field pilots running.

What you will own

  • Select the standards, methodologies and certification schemes Phi Earth's MRV is built to satisfy across voluntary carbon markets, biofuel and bio-materials certification, and compliance markets, and set the order in which each is pursued.
  • Monitor regulatory and scheme developments that affect eligibility and claims, including RED III, ISCC EU, ISCC CORSIA, GGL, CORSIA and Article 6, and assess what each change means for Phi Earth's projects and product claims.
  • Define, for each target market, the evidence a project must hold to be credited or classified, and maintain that as documented internal requirements rather than case-by-case interpretation.
  • Assess new sites, crops and feedstocks for methodological eligibility before Phi Earth commits to them, and flag where no suitable methodology exists.
  • Write the monitoring plan for each project: the parameters measured, measurement method, frequency, sampling design, responsible party and record format.
  • Define the greenhouse gas accounting approach, covering baselines, project boundaries, additionality where it applies, leakage, permanence and the treatment of uncertainty, and document the calculation so a third party can reproduce it.
  • Specify chain of custody and mass balance rules for feedstock and product batches, so origin and sustainability characteristics travel with the material through to the buyer.
  • Translate methodology and evidence requirements into written requirements for Phi Earth's data platform: what it must capture, validate, version and export, and what an audit export has to contain.
  • Set acceptance criteria for satellite and remote-sensing inputs, including where they can substitute for a field measurement and where they cannot.
  • Review platform output before each release and sign off on what the system is allowed to claim.
  • Prepare and own documentation submitted to certification and verification bodies, including project design documents, monitoring reports, sustainability declarations and evidence annexes.
  • Act as the technical point of contact for certification bodies, verification bodies and auditors, and manage clarification and corrective action requests through to closure.
  • Run audit-readiness reviews on live projects, close the gaps they surface, and maintain the audit trail on which independent verification decisions are made.
  • Write field data collection procedures for site teams in Malaysia and future sites, covering sampling, measurement, record keeping, and photographic and GPS evidence.
  • Train site teams and partner staff on those procedures and check compliance during site visits.
  • Set data-quality controls, investigate data that fails validation, and correct either the record or the procedure that produced it.
  • Answer methodology, eligibility and data questions in offtaker, partner and lender due diligence.
  • Review claims in Phi Earth's commercial, investor and marketing material for accuracy, and write the MRV and methodology sections of proposals and project documentation.

Minimum requirements

  • Six years or more in carbon methodology, MRV, greenhouse gas accounting or sustainability certification, including time on projects that reached issuance, classification or certification.
  • Hands-on experience with at least one of: voluntary carbon standards (Verra VCS, Gold Standard, ACR, CAR, Puro, Isometric); biofuel and bio-materials certification (ISCC EU, ISCC CORSIA, RSB, GGL); or verification and audit work against either.
  • Experience authoring or reviewing project design documents, monitoring plans, monitoring reports or sustainability declarations.
  • Working knowledge of greenhouse gas accounting and life cycle assessment, including baselines, boundaries, additionality, leakage, permanence and uncertainty.
  • Knowledge of chain-of-custody methods, including mass balance and book and claim.
  • Direct experience dealing with certification or verification bodies, including handling clarification and corrective action requests.
  • Experience specifying requirements for software or data systems, or working alongside engineering teams as the subject-matter expert.
  • Professional written and spoken English.

Additional experience we value

  • A degree in environmental science, agricultural science, forestry, engineering, chemistry or a related technical field.
  • Project experience in Southeast Asia.
  • Experience with Article 6 bilateral arrangements.
  • Experience with digital MRV, remote sensing or satellite data products.
  • Experience in biomass, bioenergy or feedstock supply chains.
  • Bahasa Malaysia or Bahasa Indonesia.
  • Availability to travel to project sites in Malaysia and Australia.
