Why marginal land

The future of biofuels will be grown on land we restore

The IEA expects biofuel demand to reach 215 billion litres by 2030, with two-thirds of the growth in emerging economies. The feedstock for that fuel cannot come from food-producing land.

The remaining option is marginal and degraded land, which Southeast Asia has in large supply. Working this land is difficult: Soils are depleted, yields are hard to predict, and the origin documentation that buyers and certifiers require has never been produced there.

Phi Earth works on this specific problem: making poor land a reliable, documented source of feedstock.

Process

How we turn degraded land into measurable value

  1. Assess

    We review land-use status, biomass type, existing documentation, and compliance gaps against RED III and ISCC requirements, then map a clear scope for the work ahead.

  2. Measure

    We conduct field sampling, laboratory analysis through accredited third parties, and inputs documentation. Where Phi Tech trials are active, we collect instrumented plot-level data. Nothing is self-certified.

  3. Document

    We compile the chain-of-custody record: origin coordinates, land-use change history, input logs, harvest records, processing and transport data, and calculated emissions figures. Every data point is traceable to its source.

  4. Qualify

    We help present the verified record your offtaker, financier, or regulator needs, and connect your supply into conversion and offtake channels where we can.

The time to act is now

RED III and FuelEU are active

The EU's Renewable Energy Directive III made feedstock traceability and land-use verification mandatory for advanced biofuels entering the EU market. FuelEU Maritime sets binding greenhouse gas intensity limits for ships calling at EU ports from 2025. Both are in force now. Supply chains that cannot produce compliance documentation are already locked out.

SAF demand is outrunning verified supply

Sustainable aviation fuel mandates across the EU, UK, and Singapore are creating offtake demand for advanced biofuels this decade. The binding feedstock constraint is the absence of supply that can pass compliance review. Early-mover supply chains with verified documentation hold a structural advantage.

Marginal land is the feedstock reserve, but it is unqualified

Southeast Asia holds large areas of degraded and marginal land capable of producing energy crops without competing with food production. This land is largely absent from compliant supply chains because no one has produced the qualifying documentation. That is the gap Phi Earth is designed to fill.

Active trials. Real land. Measurable results

Phi Tech is running instrumented, side-by-side field trials with partner technologies, including biological inputs and soil amendments, to test whether yields on marginal land can be raised cost-effectively. Trials are underway and data collection is in progress.
